Seeking Release of People Imprisoned by ICE in Louisiana: A Training for Volunteer Lawyers

  • Irwin Fritchie 400 Poydras Street, Ste. 2700 New Orleans United States (map)

The purpose of the CLE is to recruit and train volunteers to represent undocumented people who have been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Louisiana prisons. Civil rights advocates have documented egregious abuse of immigrants imprisoned in these facilities, including abusive use of solitary confinement that amounts to torture.

Participants will learn the various mechanisms for requesting release – Fraihat requests, parole requests, and requests pursuant to new ICE enforcement priorities - and will learn how to prepare and file a request for release.

In exchange for the CLE credit, participants are asked to volunteer for one pro bono case.  These cases can be conducted entirely remotely and require an average of 3-5 hours of work. Registered volunteers will be covered by The Pro Bono Project’s malpractice insurance and will be provided ongoing mentorship and support (including translation and interpretation services, if needed) by SPLC SIFI attorneys.

This one-hour CLE can be attended virtually or in person at the New Orleans offices of sponsoring firm Irwin Fritchie Urquhart & Moore, LLC:
