  • Jones Walker 201 St. Charles Avenue, 52nd Floor New Orleans United States (map)

Volunteer Appreciation Award Ceremony & Luncheon - 10/25 at 12 noon at Jones Walker

Every year, The Pro Bono Project honors lawyers, law firms, students, businesses, and members of the judiciary who have provided, improved, and excelled in supporting our delivery of legal services. These services are of critical importance to the increasing number of people in our area. We host our annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon to show our deep appreciation for those who support our mission to improve access to justice in our community.

Free Professionalism CLE - Pro Bono and the Promise of Equal Access to Justice - Examining In Forma Pauperis - 10/25 at 11 a.m. at Jones Walker

A free professionalism CLE will precede this year's luncheon. Jeffrey K. Coreil, Former Access to Justice Commission Chair, and Adrienne Wheeler, Executive Director of Louisiana Appleseed, will examine In Forma Pauperis (IFP) and how it is used in Louisiana.

The Louisiana Code of Civil Procedure permits a litigant to proceed with a claim without pre-paying the costs related to such claim or furnishing a bond for such costs, if the litigant is “unable to pay the costs of court, because of his poverty and lack of means” as ordered by the court after submission of the litigant’s IFP affidavit. The Louisiana Supreme Court has labeled IFP a “privilege” which assure “justice for all.” However, there is some confusion about the process. Our panelists will explore IFP's use and its potential to create greater access to the justice system.
