Meet our 2020 Summer Gillis Long Interns

For over thirty years, the Gillis Long Poverty Law Center at Loyola University College of Law provides law students the opportunity to serve the greater good while supplementing their coursework with real world legal research and practice.  Each summer, The Project welcomes interns who gain invaluable legal experience and skills while assisting us in our mission to provide free civil legal aid to under-served members of our community.

This summer, the pandemic has not slowed our interns down. Working with our staff, clients, and volunteers, Maria Frischling and Carlos Torres bring enthusiasm, energy, and a commitment to meeting today’s challenging times.

Meet Maria Frischling…

I am a rising 2L at Loyola. I plan on taking the Louisiana Bar exam when I graduate and hopefully, working as a plaintiff attorney once I'm licensed. I am interested in immigration law, labor and employment law, and pharmaceutical mass tort litigation, but my goal is to gain as much experience as I can in different areas of the law so that I'm prepared to represent a variety of clients. Interning at the Pro Bono Project has been such an educational and rewarding experience for me. I've been able to work closely with the attorneys, support staff, and other volunteers to directly provide legal aid to underserved members of the community. This opportunity has made me realize the significance and value of Access to Justice initiatives, and I plan on continuing to do pro bono work as I advance in my legal career.

Meet Carlos Torres…

I am a rising 3L at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, I hope to be able to assist as many people who may be too nervous or overwhelmed with their legal matters with my JD degree. I enjoy volunteering with the PBP because the staff is extremely welcoming and fun to work with. Additionally, I have been enjoying the ability to assist real clients with their legal needs. To experience the sense that you’re assisting a person who otherwise would likely not be able to assist their legal issues through other avenues, has been second to none.
